    Overview

    About Hair Transplant

Hair transplant is been performed to add more hair to an area on the head that may be thinning or balding. In this procedure, the hair is taken from thicker parts of the scalp, or other body parts, and grafted to the thinning or balding section of the scalp.

Even when the hair has been transplanted to a different site, still it continuously grows because its genetically programmed in such a way. Some people may require extensive hair replacement and some only requires a recreation of their hairline. So hair transplant surgery is performed to restore hair to areas of the scalp that are bald or that have thinning hair. There are two types of transplant procedures: slit grafts and micrografts. Slit grafts consists of 4 to 10 hairs per graft, whereas, Micrografts contain 1 to 2 hairs per graft, depending on the amount of coverage needed.

Who is the right candidate for hair transplant?

    • Men with male pattern baldness.
    • Women facing thinning hair problem.
    • Any person who has lost some hair due to burns or scalp injury.

Hair replacement is not a good option for:

    • Women with a widespread pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp.
    • People who don’t have enough “donor” hair sites from which to remove hair for transplant.
    • Thick scalp scars from injuries.
    • Hair loss due to chemotherapy or other medications.

    Science

    The majority of hair loss happens due to many reasons. One of them is Pattern baldness. This comes down to genetics. Few other factors are as follows;

    • Diet
    • Stress
    • Illness
    • Hormonal imbalance
    • Medications

The scalp of the patient is thoroughly cleaned. A surgeon then uses local anesthesia to numb an area of the head.

There are two main techniques that are used to obtain follicles for transplantation: FUT and FUE.

    Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)

FUT is sometimes called as follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS). The surgeon follows below steps:

The surgeon removes a piece of the scalp, usually from the back of the head. The strip size is typically about 6 to 10 inches long but can stretch from ear to ear. They close the area where the scalp was removed with stitches. The surgeon and their assistants separate the scalp strip into smaller pieces with a scalpel. They may split the piece up into as many as 2,000 smaller fragments, called grafts. Some of these grafts may contain only one hair each. Using a needle or blade, the surgeon makes small holes in the scalp where hair will be transplanted. The surgeon inserts hairs from the removed piece of scalp into the puncture holes. This step is called grafting. They then cover the surgical sites with bandages or gauze.

The specific number of grafts you receive depends on the:

    • Type of hair one has, quality of hair
    • Size of transplant site
    • Hair color

    Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

Below steps are performed by surgeon:

They shave off hair on the back of the head of patient. The surgeon then takes individual follicles out of the scalp skin. One can see tiny marks where each follicle was removed. As with the FUT procedure, the surgeon makes small holes in the scalp and grafts hair follicles into the holes. They then cover the surgical site with bandages or gauze.

There are minor side effects that can happen from a hair transplant.

    They can include:

    • Bleeding
    • Infection
    • Itching
    • Bruising around the eyes
    • Swelling of the scalp
    • A crust that forms on the areas of the scalp where hair was removed or implanted
    • Numbness or lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp
    • Inflammation or infection of the hair follicles, which is known as folliculitis
    • Shock loss, or sudden but typically temporary loss of the transplanted hair
    • Unnatural-looking tufts of hair.

FUT and FUE may each take several hours to several days to complete. Patient will go home the same day of the procedure. Most people can return to work several days after surgery.

Hair fall is normal after hair transplantation. It can fall out two to three weeks after the procedure. This makes way for new hair growth. It takes around 8 to 12 months after surgery for new hair growth

Difference between Hair Replacement and Hair Transplant Systems

The non-surgical hair replacement procedure involves toupees, hair extensions; hairpieces and hair weave to suit your existing hair. This procedure provides with a natural looking appearance just like a fuller head of hair.

Hair transplant is a surgical process which is planned to re grow and transplant healthy hair follicles taken from the scalp and finally relocating them in the different thinning areas for new growth. The benefit of hair transplant is that the new hair can be easily styled, washed and combed just like your normal hair. The process of follicle hair location is very safe and the results are excellent.
