Heart is one of the principal organs of the body. It is the pump provided by Nature that beats constantly so that blood can reach to all parts of the body, including itself. The stimulus required for beating is intrinsic, that is the heart itself is capable of generating impulses that are responsible for the contraction. These cells are called pacemaker cells which have a complex cellular mechanism for generating the impulses.

Since heart is an organ that works continuously, it is subjected to many pressures and a lot of pathologies occur that ultimately cause diseases. These diseases can either be present since birth, termed as congenital defects. Some diseases may affect the cells responsible for the contraction of the heart thus leading to problems of normal contraction. Other may affect the pacemaker cells leading to problems in impulse production and propagation. Any pathology that affects the valves, which are responsible for unidirectional flow of blood, can also lead to severe diseases. Valve problems can lead to gorging of blood.

Frequently asked questions about Cardiac Other Problem

What is Bentall procedure? When is it done?

Bentall procedure refers to the composite graft replacement which involves aortic valve, aortic root, and ascending aorta on which coronary arteries are re-implanted. Many a times people suffering from Marfan syndrome have lesions which can necessitate a Bentall procedure.

How serious is aortic aneurysm? What is the treatment for it?

Aneurysms are basically bulging of blood vessels caused due to its weakened walls. It can be very dangerous as the blood vessels can rupture and leak blood clots that can lead to fatal outcomes. The treatment involves surgical repair of the aneurysm and ligation of blood vessels at the site.

When is cardiac catheterization required?

Cardiac catheterization is the insertion of narrow tube inside the heart through artery to assess the functioning of the heart. It can involve angiogram or angioplasty and is used both for diagnostic as well as treatment purposes.

When is Glenn procedure done?

Glenn procedure involves surgical redirection of blood coming from the upper body directly into the lungs for oxygenation. It is an open heart surgery and is performed on babies with hypoplastic left heart syndrome or patients having tricuspid atresia.

What is interrupted aortic arch? How is it treated?

Interrupted aortic arch is a serious condition requiring immediate surgery to remove the blockage.

Are heart transplants done in India?

India is a medically advanced country with a lot of experienced doctors. There are some of the best cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in India performing complex surgeries. Heart transplants are done in India with a good success rate.

Recent Articles

Some of the diseases that occur in heart and cannot be grouped into particular headings. These include:

  • A congenital defect called Marfan syndrome can lead to lesions in the aortic valve, aortic root and aorta. Also many patients require the replacement of all these structures together. Bentall procedure is done to replace these structures.
  • Older people can develop aneurysm in the aorta. An aneurysm is a bulge and requires surgical intervention.
  • When heart totally fails to work because of some pathology, a heart transplant, also called cardiac transplant, is required.
  • Cardiac catheterization is done in a number of diseases. It basically involves surgical insertion of a narrow tube inside the heart through the artery.
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a congenital defect where the left part of the heart doesn’t grow normally and remains weaker after birth. If surgical intervention is not done, such babies die. Glenn procedure is an open heart surgery that aims to redirect the flow of blood coming from the upper body directly to the lungs. This procedure has been largely replaced with bidirectional Glenn procedure. It is also performed on patients with tricuspid atresia.
  • Interrupted aortic arch is a serious defect present at birth and needs surgical intervention. The aim is to remove the blockage. The two ends of the aorta are sewn together and the patent ductus arteriosus is tied off.
