It has its root in the ancient Vedic culture and was orally taught for thousands of years from accomplished masters to their disciples. The real classical Ayurveda texts begin with accounts of the transmission of medical knowledge from the Gods to Sages and then to human practitioners. In Sushruta compendium, it is written that Dhanvantari, the Hindu God of Ayurveda, took incarnation as a king of Varanasi and taught about Ayurveda medicine to a group of physicians including Sushruta.

It identifies three basic types of energy or functional principles present in each individual. These are Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. These principles are related to the basic biology of the body. Vata is the subtle energy associated with movement and composed of space and air and it promotes creativity and flexibility, Kapha is the energy that forms the structure of the body such as bones, muscles, tendons, and provides the glue that holds the cell together. Vata is composed of Earth and water and it expresses love, calmness, and forgiveness, and Pitta governs the body’s metabolic system, and it is composed of fire and water. Pitta promotes understanding and balance.
