Plasma cell disorders are monoclonal neoplasms that are related to each other because of their common progenitors in the late B-lymphocyte lineage. The main diseases that fall under this category are Multiple Myeloma (MM), Wladenstrom’s macroglobulinemia, primary amyloidosis and the heavy chain diseases. These B-cell proliferations virtually always secrete monoclonal immunoglobulin or immunoglobulin fragments which serve as tumor markers that help in the diagnosis of these neoplasms and often have pathologic consequences depending on what they secrete.

Frequently asked questions about Plasma Cell Disorders

What is the role of plasma cells?

B-cell receptors bind to antigens and most B-cells differentiate into active plasma cells, whereas others become dormant memory cells. These plasma cells secrete antibodies that profoundly augment the innate immune responses already initiated by the invaders. Antibodies mark foreign material as targets for actual destruction by the complement system, phagocytes, or NK cells.

Where are Plasma cell disorder present?

B-cell receptors bind to antigens and most B-cells differentiate into active plasma cells, whereas others become dormant memory cells. These cells are produced from the bone marrow and then differentiate into B-cells.

What are the Plasma cell diseases?

Plasma cell disorders are monoclonal neoplasms that are related to each other because of their common progenitors in the late B-lymphocyte lineage. The main diseases that fall under this category are Multiple Myeloma (MM), Wladenstrom’s macroglobulinemia, primary amyloidosis and the heavy chain diseases.

What does abnormal plasma cells mean?

Plasma cell disorders are monoclonal neoplasms that are related to each other because of their common progenitors in the late B-lymphocyte lineage. The main diseases that fall under this category are Multiple Myeloma (MM), Wladenstrom’s macroglobulinemia, primary amyloidosis and the heavy chain diseases.

What causes plasma cell disorder?

Genetic predisposition is the main cause of plasma cell disorder.

Is plasma cancer curable?

Plasma cell cancer can be cured if diagnosed at an early stage.

These plasma cell neoplasms are responsible for the 15% of the deaths caused by lymphoid neoplasms. The most common and also the most fatal of these neoplasms is multiple myeloma. This presents as tumor masses scattered throughout the skeletal system. Solitary myeloma, also known as plasmacytoma, is an infrequent variant that presents as a single mass in bone or soft tissue. The other uncommon variant is called smoldering myeloma defined by a lack of symptoms. Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia causes hyper viscosity of blood due to elevated levels of immunoglobulin M.

It is usually associated with lympho plasmocytic lymphoma which occurs usually in adults. Heavy chain disease is a rare monoclonal gammopathy and is usually seen in association with a diverse a group of disorders which includes lympho plasmocytic lymphoma and an unusual small bowel marginal zone lymphoma that occurs in malnourished populations (so called Mediterranean lymphoma). The common sign is the synthesis and secretion of heavy-chain fragments. Primary or immunocyte-associated amyloidosis results from a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells secreting light chains that are deposited as amyloid. Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is applied to patients without signs or symptoms who have small to moderately large M components in their blood. MGUS is very common in older adults and may transform to multiple myeloma or other symptomatic plasma cell neoplasms.
