The nose is the part of the human face that projects out. It resembles a pyramidal shape. The main functions of the nose are to act as a passage for air to pass and thus aid in respiration, and make the sense of smelling possible. The process of smelling is called olfaction and the receptors that make this possible are called olfactory receptors. These receptors are present in the olfactory epithelium which in turn is present in the superior part of the nasal cavity. It has a total area of around 5 sq.cm. The process of olfaction involves a complex neural pathway including the receptors, first order neurons, olfactory bulbs which contain the second order neurons called mitral cells the axons of which form the olfactory tract which end s in the olfactory cortex in the brain.

The nasal cavity serve important functions. These include warming and humidifying the inspired air, trapping and evacuating pathogens and particulate present in the inspired air and clearing the paranasal sinuses. The latter are air cavities in the skull and facial bones. Nasal vowels and consonants are created by a process called nasalization. The empty cavities of the paranasal sinuses act as sound chambers that adjust and intensify discourse and other vocal sounds. There are 4 pairs of paranasal sinuses. These are:

  • Ethmoid
  • Sphenoid
  • Frontal
  • Maxillary
