    Overview

    Details of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a painful disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue in the endometrium grows outside the uterus. This condition involves ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis. In rare cases, it can also occur in other parts of the body as well.

With endometriosis, the endometrial tissue gets thicken, breaks down, and bleeds with each menstrual cycle. As this tissue has no way to exit from the body, it gets trapped. When this condition involves the ovaries, cysts called endometriomas may form. Surrounding tissues might become irritated and eventually developing scar tissue.

Endometriosis causes pain and sometimes it would be severe especially during the period of menstruation. It may also develop fertility problems.

    Types of Endometriosis

    • Superficial peritoneal lesion: It is the most common type of endometriosis. In this condition, a lesion develops on a thin film that lines the pelvic cavity.
    • Endometrioma (ovarian sore): It is dark and fluid-filled cysts form deep in the ovaries. It is also called chocolate cysts. It can damage healthy tissues.
    • Deep infiltrating endometriosis: It is a type of endometriosis that grows under the peritoneum and can also involve organs near the uterus such as the bowel or bladder

    Science

The exact cause of endometriosis is unclear, however, some factors cause endometriosis. These are:

    • Retrograde menstruation: In this condition, menstrual blood containing endometrial cells instead of flowing out of the body flows back through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity.
    • Transformation of peritoneal cells: The hormone or immune factors promote the transformation of peritoneal cells into endometrial-like cells.
    • Embryonic cell transformation: Hormones such as estrogen can transform embryonic cells into endometrial-like cells.
    • Surgical scar implantation: After surgery, endometrial cells may attach to a surgical incision.
    • Endometrial cell transport: The blood vessels or lymphatic system could transport endometrial cells in the other parts of the body.
    • Immune disorder: A problem in the immune system of the body might make the body unable to recognize and destroy endometrial-like tissue that grows outside the uterus.

The initial symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain, associated with menstrual periods.  However, many experience pain during the menstrual periods but in endometriosis typically menstruation pain is far worse than usual and that may increase from time to time. Some most common sign and symptoms of Endometriosis are:

    • Painful periods
    • Pain in the lower midsection previously and during the monthly cycle
    • Cramps half a month around the feminine cycle
    • Heavy feminine draining or seeping between periods
    • Infertility
    • Pain with intercourse
    • Discomfort with defecations
    • Lower back agony that may happen during the feminine cycle

What is the ayurvedic viewpoint of structure and function of body?

The universe and the human body are made up of five basic elements collectively known as Panch Mahabhootas.  These five elements are Aakash (Ether/Sky), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Aapa (Water) & Prithvi (Earth). The sixth mandatory component of life is Atma (Life spirit) without which life winds up. The human body is made up of Doshas (Bio humor), Dhatus (Body matrix), and malas (excretable product).

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha called Tridoshas are physiological entities of the body that are responsible to carry out all the functions of the body. Dhatus are the structural entities of the body. Rasa (Plasma), Rakta (Blood cells), Mamsa (Muscular tissue), Meda (fatty tissue), Majja (Bone marrow), Asthi (Bone tissue) and Shukra (Hormonal & other secretions) are the Dhatus.  The unwanted or waste products of the body which are excretable produced in the body as by-products of metabolism. These products are known as malas which include sweda (sweat), pureesh (faeces), & mutra (urine). All the biotransformation within the body occurs through body channels (Srotases) which are the sites for the action of Agni.

What is the approach of life style according to Ayurveda?

According to Ayurveda, Lifestyle is divided into three parts. These are:

    • Dincharya: Diet and regimen for the day time
    • Ratricharya: Diet and regimen for the night
    • Ritucharya: Seasonal diet and regimen

One should also follow specific diet programmes after treatments for perfect health &, long disease free body status.

What is the definition of health according to Ayurveda?

Ayurveda has a very holistic concept of health. A disease-free body alone does not mean health. According to Ayurveda, those whose doshas are in balance, appetite is good, tissues of the body and natural urges are functioning properly, and whose mind, body, and spirit are full of bliss is a healthy person.

What is the importance of Ayurvedic procedures?

Ayurveda follows therapeutic measures either to prevent the disease or cure them. Ayurvedic procedures are done either to detoxify the body or as a prelude to strengthen the immune system.

Why one should go for Ayurveda treatment?

The history of Ayurveda is 5000 years old.  At present, globally this medicinal system has been adopted. Ayurveda and its treatment techniques have been proven very effective in many clinical studies. Ayurveda does not aim only to treat the sick person but also focuses to prevent illness in healthy people. Modern medicine tries to treat and remove the condition rather than treating the patient suffering from it.  Ayurveda makes a special contribution by addressing the uniqueness of each patient and helping the body to heal itself.

Why are most ayurvedic treatments time consuming?

Toxins that accumulate in the human body take a long time to manifest, as, in some diseases, the human body and mind get somewhat habituated to them. Removal of these at one go is practically impossible as it would also go against the wisdom of the body according to which the immune system works.

This is why ayurvedic treatments are time-consuming.

Does Ayurvedic medicines have any side effects?

Ayurvedic medicines are made from natural ingredients such as herbs and minerals under the supervision of expert Vaidyas. If it is taken according to the instructions of Vaidya, these medicines are safe and don’t have side effects. However, just taking the medicines is not enough as one needs to follow a proper diet and lifestyle to control the condition and works towards healing.

If not followed properly, then it may develop some problems and you can think it as side effects of medicines but in reality, it is caused due to fault in diet and lifestyle.

Is Ayurvedic treatment effective for Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is treatable by Ayurveda as it is a kapha roga by function and pitta roga by location. Ayurveda treatments comprised of therapies, massages, enemas, change in diet and lifestyle, exercise sessions such as yoga, meditation, pranayama, and other techniques will help to heal the disease from the root.
